Did you know May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month? I didn’t know and I’m an Chinese American. Being of Asian descent this commemorative month deserves some recognition. I knew nothing about this month until I was curious if there was a commemorative month for Asian Americans. Come to my surprise it’s been recognized for over 30 years. I want to celebrate Asian-Pacific heritage this month by recognizing it in this blog post.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month originated in 1978 when a congressional bill was passed to recognize the first 10 days of May as a celebration of Asian-Pacific heritage. It was eventually extended for the entire month of May in 1992 by George W. Bush. The month of May was selected to recognize that May was the month that the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869 which consisted of mostly Chinese immigrants and when the first Japanese immigrant arrived in 1873.

Lets not only celebrate Asian-Pacific heritage this month but also celebrate America for its freedom that has opened up opportunity to immigrants around the world. A toast to the land of the free for recognizing the many heritages that make up this great country.
