Drop Box

Drop Box Logo

I’ve been using Dropbox for a little while now and it’s a fantastic application that gets the job done.  Right now I’m using it for storage and back up and I can’t get over how simple it is to use.

The simplicity behind Dropbox is what I really love about it.  It’s just  another folder on my desktop that runs in the background that syncs online and that’s it.  I downloaded, installed it and then I was using it within minutes.

I currently use it on my laptop as storage for personal files and to back up some work files.  That’s only the basics of what Dropbox can do.

Dropbox Features:

  • Simple interface that runs in the background
  • Syncs files automatically to computers and web
  • Multiple computer access
  • Tracks changes made to your files
  • Online access
  • File sharing
  • Photo gallery and picture sharing

Everything that Dropbox offers is exactly what I pictured as the perfect online storage application, plus a little more.

Dropbox also gives you 2gb for FREE and if you do need additional storage they do offer additional space for a monthly or annual fee.

I really believe everything will be online one day and this is just another step closer to it.

Like Dropbox says “It Just Works” and that’s why it’s so great about it. Go check out Dropbox at GetDropbox.com, they have a great screen cast and tour.

M.Li Going Green

Michael Li Going Green

Green is what’s up these days and I’m working on being more environmentally friendly myself.  Concerns for the environment are on the rise and it’s an important time to be conscience of  mother earth.  Here is what I’m doing to be more green and I really want to highlight e-cycling.

E-cycling
Electronic waste is becoming a huge problem in this world and I can personally see that with just the e-waste that I could produce.   What do you do with old electronics that have become obsolete or broken?  That has been a question that I’ve been asking myself, so I don’t just trash my electronics.

Well after some waiting and searching I was able to find some solid e-cycling and trade in programs.  Hey if you can trade it in and get some value for it why not.  Here’s a list of sites for trade ins or recycling.

Sprint Buy Back – If you’re a Sprint customer they offer a trade in program where you can get an account credit when you trade in your phone.  My phone was 3 years old and I was able to get a $25 credit to my account, not too shabby.

BestBuy.com Trade in Center Powered by DealTree.com – Best Buy just went national with it’s trade in program not too long ago and I was able to get a nice gift card for trading in my old laptop.

Gazelle.com – Using current market data it will calculate an offer for your used electronics and if there is no value they will dispose of it responsibly for you.

Cell Phones for Soldiers – I wrote about this organization a while back for my Monthly Charity where you they’ll take your old phones and raise money for calling cards for our troops.  Check out My Monthly Charity June 2008 for information on Cell Phones for Soldiers.

Lots of great ways to recycle your electronics and you may get paid for it.  E-waste is a problem that needs to be dealt with as more and more of our electronics get old and obsolete, so next time you’re thinking about trashing your electronics try trading it in or recycle it.

Reuse
I try to reuse paper and plastic bags when possible.  I keep a folder just for scrap paper and save bags for other uses.

Conservation
Water conservation is the biggest thing I’m personally working on.  When I brush my teeth I really try not to leave the water running. Logically the next thing to work on is to take shorter showers to conserve water.  I’ve also cut down on my bottled water consumption.  I usually bring a reusable water bottle to work and drink tap water at home.

Recycling
Recycling is nothing new.  Every trash night I sort out bottles, cans, glass, cardboard and newspaper for recycling.  I also recycle ink cartridges to Office Max where they usually offer a coupon for recycling.

Pure Adapt is going Green
Pure Adapt also reflects my concern for the environment.  We at Pure Adapt:

  • Recycle our cardboard, bottles, paper, and cans
  • Use biodegradable packing peanuts
  • Reuse plastic bags
  • Use Free Cycle to give away our used packing material for reuse
  • Use recycled paper

Check out Detailed Image’s post about us going green.

Going green isn’t that bad, you can get rewarded for it and save money.  It’s totally worth it to go green.

I’m Looking forward to…

Filed in: General & Mindless Chatter

Some things I’m currently looking forward to:

BlackBerry App World
I recently just a got a Blackberry Curve for Sprint and I can see why people call it a Crackberry.  Well tonight at 10pm EST BlackBerry is going live with it’s BlackBerry App World storefront to developers.  When Blackberry App World goes live for purchases it’s only going to feed my addiction and I can’t wait.

Blackberry App World

ZillionTV
What is ZillionTV?  It is a new set top box for your TV that provides content on demand with the company striving to secure rights to all the content the world has ever created.  Imagine that!  Above all that, they have a revenue model.  Everything is free as long as you watch some commercials at the beginning of your show or movie. You can also watch commercials and make a purchase right there courtesy of the major credit card company Visa with a remote pointing device.  Along with that you also have the option to rent or buy the content.  This looks very promising with many big shot content providers like Fox, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, NBC/Universal and Disney that also hold investment stake in the company. I first heard of this from CNBC’s Jim Goldman’s Tech Check and I’m looking forward to getting more information on it since ZillionTV just announced itself to the public today.

Watchmen Movie
Lets talk about a blue condom as a promotional product with the quote “We’re Societies Only Protection”, it’s the Watchmen Movie.  I already got tickets for Friday night at 10:30 in an IMAX theater.

I’m also looking forward to breaking out of winter, I know spring is right around the corner somewhere. What are you looking forward to?

404 Pages

Filed in: General & Mindless Chatter

The other  day I was on the The North Face website and something went wrong and I ended up on their 404 page.  At first I didn’t think much of it, but after a closer look I found out that a goat ate their site and I was HA that’s a good one. Check it out the goat.

The North Face

The North Face 404 page inspired this post so I went in search for some 404 pages and here are some of the good ones I’ve found:

Frye / Wiles
fryewiles.com

Kenneth Cole
Kenneth Cole

Marvel
Marvel

Comedy Central
Comedy Ccentral

My favorite one is still the The North Face goat causing rampage in all the the 404 pages I found.

Custom 404 pages are important to give your users a pleasant experience when something goes wrong. It doesn’t matter who’s fault it was, you want to keep users on your site and make it easy for them to search or navigate your site when this happens. Keeping it simple is probably a good thing too, but I personally don’t mind seeing a good humorous 404 page as long as I can navigate back to the site.

In my 404 quest I also found out something interesting about the Comedy Central 404 page. Not only is it a custom 404 page, it also redirects you back to the homepage after 20 some odd seconds. There usually isn’t any reason to stay on a 404 page, so redirecting your 404 page makes sense as long as it’s done in search engine friendly way.

Who would’ve thought 404 page could’ve been this fun.  Got some good 404 pages, show me what you got.

Change Has Come to WhiteHouse.gov

Filed in: General & Mindless Chatter,Politics

I saw an awesome post about the change that has come to America as we transition to our 44th President of the United States of America regarding  Whitehouse.gov on Gizmodo,  “The White House Websited:  Today vs. When Bush Took Office“.  In the post it had a screenshot of the the WhiteHouse.gov in 2001 compared to 2009 and you can see how far web design has come.

I decided to take it one step further using the Wayback Machine (cool site that archives websites all the way back to 1996) and taking some screenshots of WhiteHouse.gov from the Clinton Administration through to the current new Obama Administration.

Pretty cool to see how much web design has changed since the late 90′s.   If you haven’t been to the new WhiteHouse.gov website, it is a wonderfully designed site that is worth taking a gander at.

I welcome the new Obama Adminisitration and embrace the change.
