Pure Adapt vs. BS

Filed in: Entrepreneur

Here’s an update on Pure Adapt’s transition to the warehouse. Everything started out smoothly with the move, but soon enough Pure Adapt will encounter one problem after another. For the past few weeks Pure Adapt has gone through a lot and we are surely are not running at peak efficiency with many unforeseen obstacles. At the same time, many of these problems are completely out our control.

First, right before the move to the warehouse George got sick and Pure Adapt is down one man, but he was fine by the time we started our move. The first few days of the move did go smoothly as we moved all our products to the warehouse and got ourselves situated. I documented the move in a previous post, The Warehouse.

To start our first week at the warehouse, George’s laptop hard drive craps out. That’s the first kick to the balls for that week.

Everything with the warehouse has been great to start the week, then we find our space filled with a toxic odor. We all thought they were just painting in the space next to us, but we find out they are applying epoxy to massive pieces of machinery. I’m sure this odor was not healthy for us and we all lost many brain cells. At this point George doesn’t have his laptop and our work environment is not so great as we inhale toxic fumes.

Now it’s midweek and we have another man go down when Adam catches a cold, yet another kick to the balls. We haven’t even been in the warehouse for week yet and all these unforeseen problems keep arising all at the same time.

Lets get to Friday now, my day to go in early. Greg and I have planned to do a little remodeling of the the office space and bathroom in our warehouse, so I had to bring some things from home to prepare for our weekend project. I remembered everything I needed for the prep work and come to find out my dumbass forgot my laptop. I was going to get some of my work done before I got started on cleaning and prepping for the remodeling. Not that big of a deal, since I did get some work done on the desktop at the warehouse.

Now while I was working on the desktop in the warehouse, I noticed it started to get colder and colder. At first I thought nothing of it and turned on the space heater that Adam brought in, but it really didn’t do anything so I went to check on the temperature on thermostat. I checked it a few times and the temperature was slowly but surely decreasing. I checked the heater and there was no heat coming out, but there was still heat in the office space. Don’t forget our warehouse space was still filled with that toxic odor of epoxy. It got so cold that I couldn’t work on the desktop anymore, so I started cleaning up the office space.

While cleaning up in the office space of the warehouse I notice the heat had stopped working in there as well. When Greg got to the warehouse I had to confirm with him that I wasn’t going crazy the the heat in the warehouse had stopped working. I got confirmation that I wasn’t crazy, so we called maintenance. Maintenance was pretty responsive and they couldn’t figure out the problem except that we may be out of oil. Funny thing is we just filled up the previous week and it’s only been like eight days. I called up asking for a oil refill asap, but they couldn’t come till Monday. I repeatedly told them we had no heat and asked how soon they could come. If it is Monday I asked for a time and they kept saying it was going to snow, so they couldn’t get a time for us. That’s weak and it did not snow on Monday. Right now we have no heat while Greg and I cleaned the office space and bathroom to get ready for the painting and laminate flooring we planned for our remodeling. On the record the bathrooms were nasty as me and Greg scrubbed it down. That’s just fantastic Pure Adapt keeps getting kicked while were down. With no heat, now the concern turns to all the auto detailing products we carry. With temperatures approaching freezing I’m almost positive it can’t be a good thing for the products. We cleaned all day, so we can get right to work on Saturday and we find out that we may be hit with a major snow storm, that’s just fantastic.

At the same time most the weekend our server was slow and we probably lost some orders. That was one of the bright spots at Pure Adapt and that was taken away from us. Is there any other BS we have to deal with.

Snow storm or not we were going to go in to do our remodeling, because we prepped everything and don’t want to postpone stuff into the work week. Luckily the snow storm was fluke and it was fairly warm winter day. Saturday morning Greg and I along with his brother went to buy supplies for the remodel. We go to the Home Depot on Central Ave in Albany to get everything and we find out that is this Home Depot we went to doesn’t carry the laminate flooring, wtf. So we swing by the Washinton Ave Home Depot. We started to pick out our flooring and find out our first 6 choices were all out. Our first choices were on the cheaper end of the spectrum, so we ended up spending a little bit more than we wanted on the flooring. That’s just great we got lots of money to throw around (I’m being sarcastic). Alright lets just move on and get to work. We were planning on doing all the painting and flooring Saturday, they may have been a little bit ambitious. We ended up doing the flooring on Sunday.

The temperature throughout the warehouse stabilized around 40-43 degrees, which was a good thing. Sunday we put in the flooring with the help of Greg’s Father and my little cousin John. The floor came out great and that last thing to do was to put the molding on that didn’t come out to great cause we didn’t read the directions. That’s the end to an long weekend. Here are some before and after pictures of our office space, I got to say it’s 100 times better with the remodel.

Before

After

I want to thank Vicky(Greg’s Girlfriend), Jim (Greg’s Brother), Mr. Pautler and my little cousin John for helping out with the remodeling.

It’s Monday now and we find out that our oil tank wasn’t completely filled up the first time, so that’s why we didn’t have heat. They didn’t fill it up cause they filled it too quickly and that’s why it only filled up 27 gallons for a 1000 gallon tank. That’s wack, but at least we know our heater isn’t broken. The epoxy will not be gone till sometime next week I assume, because they will be applying it for one or two more days. I can’t wait till the smell is gone. Things are looking a little better after week of BS.

Can anything else go wrong, I really hope not because this is a very important month for us as we work our asses off to get Tastefully Driven up and running by our hard launch date of 4.1.08. All this sucks and is a bunch of BS stuff that is out our control. Well we’re going to keep pushing on, we will not let this deter us. It can only get better from here I hope, what else can go wrong, but who knows.
